The difficulty of great journalism is illustrated in the face to face TV interview. Too many interviewers allow their subjects to escape the questions the interviewees don't want to answer. Many times, when the interviews become intense exchanges, it's an confrontation hard to watch. Great journalists remain steadfast to get to the facts. And they, much like the journalist who wrote "The Newsman," recognize and accept the consequences of their pursuit of the truth, and know there will be more lashes than laurels in their vital endeavor. Simply put, the truth might make us free, but the journalists help pay the bill.
I always appreciate your great info and the sobering reminder of how full of shit the leaders of the country have been and continue to be. You were ( and are) incredibly brave. I love hearing about Rather. My first tour at KHOU in the early 80s, he would stop by and give us talks. Good stuff.
Terrific article in many respects. I went through the same efforts to join the Texas Air National Guard and learned about the long waiting list. I ultimately joined the Air Force and spent 4 1/2 years on active duty which included two tours in Southeast Asia flying combat missions out of Thailand. I was able to get out “early” due to the end of the war. I’ve jokingly told folks ever since that W got my slot. Always a fan of Mr. Rather. Looking forward to program tonight.
