So many motorcycle trips you've taken... and one included me, albeit reluctantly on your part. However, I was thrilled to have my first cross-country motorcycle trip from Houston to Padre Island. I hope this photo comes through: /Users/Mauri/Desktop/Screen Shot 2023-12-27 at 8.25.47 AM.png
That was a fun TV trip, except for Bob Franklin's need to pose and pretend he was part of an advertising circular for Harley. Remember him making sure his bike was properly aligned next to the beach so he could lean on it and smoke, like some iconic figure? I am certain that is the only journey he ever took on his bike beyond to the local pub now and again. I saw him turn up years ago with some sort of business in Mobile, Alabama, ironically when I was riding through to Florida. Sent him an email but never heard from him.
When are you and the little red-haired girl coming back to visit Colorado? You have to see what has come of our "little" Timnath (600 people in 2010. Now more than 9,000), Windsor & Wellington. Fort Collins will never be Boulder. And that's a good thing! It is really booming as a fun college town with culinary, artisan and musical elements. We love living in NoCo vs. Denver. Bourbons at the Old Elk Distillery tasting room and/or beers just down the street at Timnath Beerwerks are calling!
I promise to visit this year, bud. Will be riding the bike through there. Have never been to little Big Horn and am determined to get there this summer. Leave a light on!
Little Big Horn is a straight shot, 6-hour drive north of us.
Will you head west from there to Red Lodge and the Beartooth Highway? If you haven't ridden that, you'll want to. It's only 2 hours from Little Big Horn.
Yeah, actually, that is the plan. I have never ridden Beartooth and every cyclist pal I have mentions it. I've only been to Montana twice, once on a campaign stop, and another time when I was only 20 and riding cross country on my Honda 450. I was in a hurry to get back to college in Michigan, so I didn't see much. I've always been fascinated with the Custer story and have read all the biographies of him and Crazy Horse, and even Custer's diary, "My Life on the Plains," so I've got to knock Little Big Horn off my list. I've been to all the other major national parks, though.
If you decide to head further west, let me know. Wade's family homesteaded in 1876 in Hall, Montana (1 hour SE of Missoula). His cousin Cooper manages the ranch. It's quite something. Bucolic. Right out of the TV show, "Yellowstone," except nobody is getting murdered, thankfully. Philipsburg is just up the road on the fringe of the Pintler Range. It is an amazing old mining community with restored Victorian buildings.
Yep, the goal is to go west to Oregon and then down the Pacific Coast Highway, so I'll keep that in mind. Missoula was where we stopped on a campaign swing years ago while traveling with Clinton. Would like to spend a few days there, too. BTW, been to Ft. Collins several times through the years. A guy I started out in TV with, I may have told you this in the past, was the photographer for the Channel 9 news bureau there. I worked for Channel 9 as the Western Slope correspondent for a bit back in the early 80s. Officed in Glenwood Springs at the Hotel Colorado. Quite the assignment.
What team were you playing for when that was taken #22? And I'll have to look up the Alpine Cowboys. Seems to me like anything in Alpine is good, just as baseball is anywhere.
I think it was the Diamondbacks that year. The pic, tho, was from the October World Series tournament in Phoenix. I’ll send you a piece I wrote about the Cowboys and Kokernot Park/Field.
You have rich memories to look back on. You know how to live a full life! Many more years for you and your beautiful family.
