Well, Bridget, skepticism is a great way to enter into anything in this era. And as a reporter, it was always my baseline starting point. I do, however, trust people after they've earned my trust. Just don't give that away.
Still hard for me to think about it thirty years later, Ed. Those three Waco reporters risked their lives to tell the truth and all they got was criticized and their careers ruined.
I can't believe it was such a shoddy job by the ATF and the ridiculousness of appointing blame to reporters - just incredible failure of what is right. I am thankful for reporters who inform and sometimes risk to get the information out. I hope we are not behaving like those countries who threaten and silence reporters from telling the truth. That is dangerous.
I remember Waco tragedy and it was a shock to think one greedy , manipulative man could put a spell on so many innocent people. Awful event. Thank you for such a riveting account with your writing
The Waco Branch Dravidian thing happened two years before I moved to Texas. There were only a couple of incidents before this one that made me question actions and decisions of government and politicians. This one was a pivotal, though. I hate to say it, but I begin with skepticism and try to find trust. I used to begin with trust until there was evidence that I should be skeptical. I hate that feeling.
Been 30 years, Anna, and I still can't believe it, either, even though I watch it all unfold.
One of the many journalistic reasons I may have PTSD, Robyn. Or maybe I'm just a natural born grump. Who knows? Thanks for the kind words, my friend.

Very personal story of a terrible event. Thanks for telling it. Sorry you and your colleagues went through it. And sorry of course for all the others.

Great piece, Jim. Such an unbelievable story told so well. I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend.
Great story. A tragedy that needs remembering so that we can hope to avoid the next one.
Jesus, Jim. That's a helluva a story.
