I wrote about that on my Substack, in the entry for Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday.
Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett was denying Meredith entry to Ole Miss by day and mobilizing racists on TV, but by night, he was begging the Kennedys for a peaceful resolution to the crisis that woujld save face, mostly his.
Barnett was very afraid of the feds, but I think our culture has changed. Defying the federal government now seems to be a popular concept for conservatives. They hate the government but they run hard to get elected to jobs in the government. I think we are going to see some bad things at the border. BTW, Mississippi named it's largest freshwater reservoir, NE of Jackson and on the Natchez Trace, after Ross Barnett. I've seen no indication they intend to change it, either. Our state motto in Texas ought to be, "Thank god for Mississippi."
Agreed...we see they lack respect and/or fear of the Feds, because of January 6, and that thye accept any ridiculous conspiracy theory, as long as it makes the US government look like evil villains.
There will be more bloodshed at the Rio Grande. At least we don't see David Duke, Billy Riccio, and J.T. Ready patrolling it any more. Those three famous neo-Nazis got in trouble: Duke went to prison for using his followers' donations to study the laws of probability on Mississippi River casinos and chasing the wives of his colleagues. Riccio was accused of fondling little boys. And J.T. Ready topped them all -- despite forming a militia to guard the border, the only people he shot were his family, including his own kid. Seeing what he had done, he turned his gun on himself, saving the Crown the costs of prosecution and putting him out of our misery.
I didn't take a lot of comfort in the SCOTUS ruling. What I considered black letter law took on a shade of gray with the 5-4 SCOTUS ruling. But a law is only as good as its enforcement. Maybe if the Army loans the tanks and other machinery necessary to the US Border Patrol to do the clearing job? That wouldn't go against Posse Comitatus. Abbott and his coterie of like idiots need a good hard spanking.
OMG, is this OPERATION JADE HELM 15 REDUX? And has it really been EIGHT YEARS since Abbott instructed Texas National Guard Major General Betty (now there’s a Joseph Heller character name for you) and his minions to monitor the army training exercise to be sure they didn’t bivouac in Texas Wal-Marts and drain our precious bodily fluids (to throw in another antiwar movie for good measure). But to be fair, we all did remain safe because of that. 😊
Ha, I wish to hell I'd thought of Jade Helm when I was writing the piece, Rog; it's a grand indication of how his pitiful little mind works. I'm afraid this little performative piece of shit from him could represent actual danger, though.
Living within a few miles of the DMR and seeing the " TEXIT" signs hung around Fort Davis, this post hits home...besides all the reasons why it isn't legal these secessionist morons don't seem to have considered the financial impact...and then, of course, there's the shear stupidity of it all...but that's the #FascistAbbottini republiKKKLans these days...
He's as wrong about this as he is everything else, Frank. Federal law always supersedes state regulations. It's how we hold the union together. Further, the term "invasion" in that section of the Constitution refers to an act of war. Here is the exact language: "No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay." It literally precludes actions like those being taken by Abbott.
That's my take. But I think there is a big downside for Biden if he calls up the Texas National Guard and gives them actual military commanders with orders pull it all down.
Having grown up in Mississippi during this era I recall the fear and confusion more than anything else. An American Insurrection by William Doyle is a thoughtful book on the very real constitutional crisis created by Barnett's inability/unwillingness to control response to Meredith's enrollment that ultimately prompted President Kennedy to federalize the National Guard and add additional troops from regular military units. In addition to the riots Barnett's "decree of interposition" put 1000s of the state's employees jobs iin jeopardy. It was a bery scary time.
This has some real potential for a disastrous outcome.. Stay tuned, I guess. It would be hilarious though if Texas seceded, only to find their economy obliterated by Trumps tariffs.
Texas cannot secede without raising an army and sending them to the border to confront US troops. There is no legal mechanism in the constitution for it. Just some more idiots jabbering.
Texans want to secede? That begs the question: how will they define Texan citizenship? Anyone residing in Texas when they do so? All American citizens residing in Texas when they do so? what if American citizens residing in Texas refuse to become Texicans? Will they be hurled out of the new nation with only the clothes on their backs?
What will they do for money? Use US dollars?
What will they do when the US government pulls its agencies and the money they pump into the Texan economy out of the new republic? Depend on their oil? I don't think so.
Seems like I have seen this scenario before when James Meredith enrolled at Ole Miss and President Kennedy had to order troops in to restore order.

I know about the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

I haven't been back in so long.

I’ve lived in Texas since 1978
Never saw a Texas governor refuse help from the federal government for our hurricanes and other natural disasters.
Abbott is no exception.
To be truly independent Texas has to be truly independent of the millions in federal aid it receives when disaster strikes.
Or those federal dollars for social programs. Or infrastructure.
It’s like a child wanting to be emancipated from his parents but still living at home enjoying the amenities living at home is providing.
Texas secession has been hanging over US for decades. No one has really come up with a real solid plan for what happens the day after Texas secedes.
It’s more than a notion.

Abbott is having a George Wallace moment...?
That's my take. But I think there is a big downside for Biden if he calls up the Texas National Guard and gives them actual military commanders with orders pull it all down.
Which could be the point of the exercise...Biden will be damned if he does, damned if he doesn't...
It is the precise outcome Abbott seeks.

They have to re-route their supply chain through Mexico to avoid Trump's tariffs.
You would think the Bloated Yam would give them a break.
