There is a power and authority "trip" that many, if not most, people associate with law enforcement. And there's no shortage of experiential info to substantiate the assertion.
Many people in positions of authority have fragile egos and when they feel that they have been slighted they act out because they have the protection of the authority they carry, which is so sad.
My first thought when I heard of Mr. Nicol's death was, "What do you expect? He ran from the cops." It didn't occur to me that such a response would not take place. How's that for an embedded belief regarding police behavior?
