Plenty of room here in New Mexico for you! And remember that story I tell all the time about leaving a motel in Amarillo that was so terrible I left without the free breakfast and didn't stop until I'd crossed the state line and pulled into a NM Welcome Center. "I sure am glad to be in New Mexico," I said to the woman behind the counter. She was busy with something but shook her head and laughed without looking up:
My sister and I had the same experience but headed in the other direction — we headed east out of Lordsburg and never looked back. Just ask us about the Lordsburg Burger Botts episode. It’s Legend
Great essay, as usual. More than anyone else, you capture the angst that comes from sitting on porch somewhere in Texas, taking in a beautiful view and fortified by beverages and buddies, and wondering what the f*ck is wrong with our leaders.
This a terrific piece - chock full of information and spot on about the state of our state. Very difficult times these and no clarity as to what could move us forward. ". . . we had beaten back the darkness, but somehow the darkness slipped back in..." ARC Angels "Always believed in you."
Every week, you write what's on my heart. This one comes closest to expressing my political thoughts. Hubris among state office-holders is rampant. Sadly, so is the Texas voters' interest in engaging in their obligations as a citizen and casting an informed ballot. That combination can only lead to more trouble in the future. Today's heavy-handed Texas "conservatism" sounds more like Orwell's "Big Brother." Especially when you remember his warning that, “Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.”
Lickspittle!!! I have never heard anyone say that or even seen it in print. I love a good new vocabulary word. The politics....I try to take Sundays off from too much of it.
If folks don’t vote, vote, vote, we’re screwed, screwed, screwed.

Politics, no doubt, have always represented a criminal enterprise outside the confines of prison. Abbott is just more transparent about it.
BTW. Ask my brother Steve to tell you the story of when we were swept through the Perdanales spillway.
Great piece, especially “commander in thief.” Ride west and don’t look back. Plenty of rich history, culture and scenery to be had.
