J.B. Thanks for your words. Like most here I love your words of both politics and travel. Seems we've both been down some of the same roads.

I hope the winter in Michigan remains harsh enough to bring you back to Texas. Otherwise, I'll expect to see a sale sign in your brown, cracked, formerly front yard.

I wouldn't blame you however, with both drought and shit heads run rampant in Texas.

Wish I could get out. Nothing farther south than Winnipeg for me. I love Canadian nice and poutine 😁

Anyway, I'll keep the channel clear on this end and look for more from you as always.

I enjoy both personal and political stories. You are a truly gifted journalist. Substack is still stoking membership.

Many thanks, Gloria. I think I will keep doing both, which seems to be the overwhelming opinion.

So sad. There are times that I think of returning to the Austin area, but I know it can't support me. I was initially drawn to your stories of youthful adventure, but I like the political stories too. You can write both well so you should.

Thanks, Ed. Seems to be the consensus I'm getting this morning.

Somebody has to fill the huge hole left by the deaths of Larry McMurtry and Molly Ivans, and I think you are that person. Keep on writing!

If I told friends of this comparison, no one would believe it so I'll just leave it here in case some of them come along. Terribly flattered, John.

This essay demonstrates your mastery of both the personal and the political. I hope you will continue to make both part of your brand.

As kind a compliment I could imagine coming from another talented writer and thinker.

I like your writing patterns just the way they are.

To the question of politics or life’s story: both. To the statement of the heartbreak that is Texas: yup.

Mine too, Jim. And don’t forget the turning of HISD libraries (now closed) into detention center. F U freedom speech and religion. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. We are living it in TX.

Great writing! I like both your personal and railing agains the Texas pols!

All those things, Mark, and even as a nearly full-time critic, it's hard to keep up with the craziness and injustices.
