It is difficult to overcome the inertia created by a political process that at best is broken and, at worse, shams democracy. I'm not foolish; the government is in the hands of oligarchs and power brokers. Yet, I never felt prouder as an American than when Obama was elected, an affirmation of something positive in our process. The only weapon we 98.5 percent of the people have is the vote, so I'm going to use it. Sometimes it works.

I am impressed you spent so many years trying to out The Shrub!

I am one of the people who have generally been more optimistic about our government, and in voting, though with the clear-eyed reality that so much is beyond our control, and even beyond some of our electeds. When you write about the GWB years, it's hard not to think about how much time I spent telling people he was lying while being told I wasn't being patriotic. And now two decades later we know the truth and no one cares.

In my Viet Nam-era youth I always wondered how communism thousands of miles away was a bigger priority than communism 90 miles from Florida(!)...and W's revenge war showed its true reason when an Army leader posed with a gallon of crude oil for a publicity photo...your first-hand telling of the Contra debacle brings what little I knew together with your information to complete the story...kin to the praise being heaped on #Killinger...thanks for this...

Is anybody else getting concerned about how Trump might try to use these real deep state conspiracies as validation for his trumped up anti-Trump deep state conspiracies? James, did you ever Texas to the World anything on the bogus swiftboating of John Kerry, which I believe was managed out of a Republican PR firm here in Dallas. Or did I read that and forget where I saw it? I still wonder what other hidden truths prevented Kerry from presenting an obvious defense?

Another incisive commentary on our world, then and now, and how our sad history repeats itself. Unfortunately, it actually gets worse with each repetition.
