This ought to be his epitaph, because something snapped in him when he thought he could be taken seriously as a national figure:

“Greg Abbott, a Republican with distant, fatuous dreams of being president.”

Dehumanizing linguistics says it all.

That photo of the “river wall” makes my stomach turn.

Yep, very sad, bud. Nothing to say. I feel helpless.

What a tragic situation; obscene, really. I appreciate your efforts to bring attention to it. Abbott is one son of a bitch.

Thanks, Mick. Abbott is taking son of a bitch to new boundaries while calling himself a Christian. He seems the exact opposite of whatever that is supposed to be these days.

A friend was commenting to me how odd it is that Democratic politicians don't take more pains to promote themselves and their policies as Christian -- since they're so much closer to the words of Christ. I suppose it's because they respect the separation of church and state.

I think all of your essays are milestone posts, because you are injecting common sense and intelligence into the craziness of political people. Todays post is no exception. Of course the border problems are not being solved, and of course Abbott only makes it worse. Thanks for bringing some truth and light on the border. We can solve this problem with compassion and common sense.

Thanks, Tom. Means a lot to hear. Nothing more important when you write that to connect with people who appreciate your thinking. I agree the border issue just needs compassion and a touch of common sense, not anger and xenophobia.

Albeit very well written, this is sad news. The photo makes me sick. What have we become? By the way, we need workers in this country. We are short of everything, including doctors (74,000 short of specialists)... so, we need more immigrants, not fewer. Nobody works harder and loves this country more than recent immigrants.

No answers, Mauri. It's hard to believe, and every week gets more painful to witness.

Thank you J.B. Eagle Pass/Pideras Negris has a place in my heart since child hood. Remember the Indians that used to live under the bridge? They'd beg you to throw down change as you crossed. Now they're taking bucket loads in their casinos. Mexicans used to wade across there. Go mow some yards, cook, or baby sit, then wade home. Times are different. "Home" isn't safe anymore. El Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico have fallen victim to the same drug cartels that that are creating and killing drug users in this country. Greg aButt is forcing these people back into the meat grinder they wish to escape. Let Greg tend a vineyard, mow some yards, lay some concrete. Hell, can he sheet rock, float a joint (Don't laugh. You know what I mean.) There are alot of occupations, I don't want to sound bigoted, that my white brothers won't or have forgotten how to do. Matter of fact there is a serious shortage of manual labor workers. When one of these "border bigots" pipes up, we should invite them to do the job they say is being taken. As far as the criminal aspect of border crossers goes, I haven't seen much. Most of the Latino names I see on the police blotters here in south Texas are second generation at most. Where are the international threats?

Why, why, why must all these people die? Not even be put in some nasty stinking prison. DIE! Gotta ask, who's the war criminal?

Of course I remember the tribe under the bridge. I did several TV news reports on them. The Kickapoo. Lived in cardboard huts begging tourists for money. They were a people without a country. Mexico would not give them citizenship and the US put them on temporary visas that ran out and were never renewed. Historically, the tribe spent winters in the mountains of northern Mexico summers as far north as Oklahoma. Now they spend every night counting cash in their casino, as you suggest. As for Abbott, he won't get away with his garbage forever. This river barrier thing is bound for a court, and he will lose. The legislature has before it funding for what amounts to a Texas border patrol, and that may pass this week, if not in the next special session. Those are duties reserved by the constitution to the federal government, not the states. People need to challenge this crap.

I’m sure Governor Abattoir considered the Cochrane razor balls first…

I suspect Cochrane already has the contract for all the razor wire and they were the natural no-bid contractor to get this floating barrier, and undoubtedly are big contributors to Abbott's campaign coffers.
