That's what made LBJ so interesting. I truly think he was bipolar. Early in his career teaching in S. Texas, he was overwhelmed by the state of poor Mexican kids. He bought them food and books and writing paper with his own money. But he was also a rank racist with black people. The good he did with Civil Rights and the Voting Rights Act was offset by the idiotic war he prosecuted. And if it had not been for King, I'm not sure LBJ would've pushed civil rights. He was a purely political person and saw what was coming and went about surfing the zeitgeist for political effect for himself as much as societal change.

Clearly for some people denial is more comfortable than truth. The acceptance of the phantom shooter fairly tales is ridiculous. Ah well, it's not LBJ Day for a reason. :)
