Such terrific storytelling! I could just see those storms. Jim I really enjoy your writing. Please keep it up. (And don't let up on the bozo at the Capital!)

Thank you, Caroline. Such a kind thing to say. I'd prefer to write this kind of material but, as you suggest, I have to keep an eye on the bad guy in the pink granite building. Howdy to my compadre Steve.

First things first: the post is time stamped 3:00 AM!!!! I didn’t read it until around 5:00 AM the morning you posted.🤪😁 I was too bleary eyed to comment then. But anyway, thank you for my tour of Texas. I have been in Texas 26 years and haven’t explored it enough. I loved the story about the boy that saved the lives of others. He sacrificed himself for others. It seems like a good story for Easter weekend.

Thanks, Bridget. I've always thought there should be a memorial to John Bankston, JR in front of his high school up in Ennis. And, yes, it is a story for Easter weekend. I was at the river covering that story when Amanda was only 3 months old and I had just become a father. When his dad later asked us to fly him in our helicopter to help find his son, I could not say no. I think we flew up and down the river for three days and then DPS flew him for a few. Senior came back the next year to look some more. The river never simply gave the kid back up. I covered a lot of sad stories, but that was among the saddest, and, as you suggest, also heartening because of his demonstration of the human spirt.

What a magnificent piece of writing! I have always enjoyed your writing as a journalist, but this goes way beyond any newspaper piece I’ve ever read. Bravo!

As usual, your writing is so evocative and engaging. I felt like I was out there again, watching those big skies and the primordial play of nature across them. See you in the Broken Wheel Bar soon, my friend.
