I think anything you do in that particular park creates an epic memory, John. I've got another one to write about from another trip. Never seemed like small things happened there.

Slavery was the proximate cause. The South wanted to expand it into the Mexican held territory of Tejas but Mexico had outlawed slavery in 1829, and was having none of it in the Tejas settlements. Of course, territorial greed of an expanding nation figured into it. Even Lincoln called the Mexican-American war the "most unjust in history." The historical sentiment down there is that Mexicans didn't cross the border, the border crossed them.
